Clothing is a great to give a man who has everything, especially these days where there is such a huge selection of different types of clothing, ranging from dress to ultra casual. Basically anything he could possible want, or hoped for, can be found.

In recent history men have had two different sets of clothing, work and play. Work clothing was a suit, or blazer, always with a dress shirt, always with a tie, and off course dress pants, unless he did not work in an office.

Play clothing was a t-shirt and shorts, or a sweatshirt and jeans, or a mixture. But he didn’t care because he didn’t have to dress for success (so to speak).

Clothing for men has changed a lot over the years.

I remember my father being very conscious of his attire. He always wore a suit to work, had an incredible tie selection, shirts he would only have dry cleaned, and a shoe collection any woman would admire. Even his casual clothes could be worn to the office in today’s world. The only time you would see him in anything out of the ordinary was on the golf course.

Then came the greaser phase.

“Greasers” have been around long before Marlon Brando in “The Wild One”, John Travolta in “Grease” and the “Fonze” in “Happy Days”. With black leather jackets, blue jeans, black boots, white t-shirt, this clothing stuck and still remains to this day.

Then came the beatniks phase.

Men wore black turtlenecks, black pants, black shoes, all sorts of dark clothes and the occasional beret with dark sunglasses.

Then came flower power.

Men’s clothing took a different turn and it was a free-for-all on style. The suits, if worn, might be covered in stripes, paisley, flowers, if not at least the tie, and wild shoes. Play wear was tie dyed shirts and bell bottom jeans (usually frayed at the bottom).

Gosh, there are so many fashion stops through the decades, I don’t have time to touch on them all so let’s take a leap through time to the recent past.

Skipping ahead, ‘Casual Friday’ came along.

Many just wore jeans and a sweater. Some wore shorts and a graphic t-shirt. Others, well those were sent home from work because it was a ‘tad’ too casual.

Recently I have seen a very definite change in men’s clothing choices. Wearing the same suit everyday with maybe a change of tie is not longer the case. A torn t-shirt and ripped jeans are usually designer and not because they are worn out. You will even find bikers wearing high end leathers.

I honestly think the change in men’s view on style has a lot to do with programs like:

White Collar – This program really has reintroduced hats to men, which I just love. The suits are stylish with incredible ties, but the casual wear is more high end fashion. T-shirts, sweaters, blazers, etc.

Suits – This program has made wearing suits that men are proud of fashionable again. Check out the accessories of a tie pin, tie clip, handkerchief and more.

Franklin and Bash – This program has a really good mixture of suits and casual. The suits are always stylish, the casual wear fits the scene. Even their casual wear is a fashion statement.

Last but not least, Mad Men. Their fantastic portrayal of the fashions from that era has even been credited with starting a retro revolution in both the current fashion looks and the return to ‘looking sharp’ all the time.

So what does all this mean?

It means that men are becoming more aware of their appearance, both at work and at play. That’s not to say all men weren’t conscious of what they wore before, but now you are more likely to find men quite happy to be complimented on what they are wearing, and less uncomfortable with what they have to wear.
