Yes finding a present for Mom can be so difficult since there are so many different types of Mom’s these days. Mother’s are no longer what is consider ‘traditional’.

Me, well I am a Mother, but a birth Mother, so I have a child but didn’t raise him.  There are biological Mothers who kept and raised their kids, adoptive Mothers who may have biological children as well, step Mothers who may also have biological children, two Mothers of a child or children, a Mother-in-law or two, women who are Mother’s of pets, and so many more iterations of what a Mother is.

So what on earth do you buy Mom? Good question.

I think you have to look at the relationship you have with the ‘Mother’ you have in your life.  Is she someone you are close with so know what she would like.  Or a Mother that you want to show you appreciation for everything she has done for you. Maybe a Mother you care about but you are not that close.

Let’s start with a gift that will work for a Mother no matter what the relationship.

You can never go wrong with flowers or plants. Flowers are a lovely accent to your Mom’s home and will make her feel wonderful, or she may feed them to the garbage 🙂 A plant will be a welcome addition to her home as well, and depending on the plant, may be transferred to the garden to sprout year after year.

I have talked about all the different types of Mom’s we have in our life. Today I want to talk about a gift for a Mom that you may never have thought of.

A personal story.

My Oma (grandmother) was a wee bit of thing, height wise, and not so much a wee bit of a thing, size wise, and she was full of joy and full of life. She loved to play cards, usually canasta, but also poker and many others.  She loved card games. I always thought she would have loved Las Vegas.

But the best part of the break in the card game was having a beer or two.

That was the special part of playing cards for my Oma.  She would go and get a beer for everyone, except us underage kids, and I could see her eyes light up.  It wasn’t about alcohol, it was that about the social tradition of playing cards, eating snacks and enjoying a beer with friends and family. The beer was part of the rituals she loved and it made her happy (and yes she did love her beer).

Yah Mothers, even Grandmothers, will be thrilled with a beer gift.  If my Oma was around today I would give her a monthly beer gift.
