From the first hint of warmer weather to the first snowfall you will find him out in the backyard, or on the balcony, happily cooking up a meal. It’s some sort of primal instinct I think since you are not likely to see them happily cooking away in the kitchen, though of course there are exceptions. What better gift to give your man.
But before I go into that I have a story to tell you.
Our family is no different when it comes to the man at the grill. He happily cooks away day after day, month after month. This particular time it was well into fall but he wasn’t ready to give up his ‘man job’.
So bundled up he headed out to the balcony to fire up the BBQ.
He had to turn the outside light on to see what he was doing, that’s how late in the season it was. I was in the kitchen cutting up onions to put in melted butter to add to our meal. The salad was already done. I popped my head out to check on the progress and got the okay to start frying up the onions. I put them on simmer, grabbed my jacket and went out on the balcony to join my master chef.
As I closed the sliding door I heard a click. It was a click I hadn’t heard before but I didn’t think much of it.
We both hovered around the BBQ as he moved pieces and flipped the sizzling meat. He hovered as he worked, I hovered to try and stay warm. On the last flip I knew it was time to check that the onions would be done to perfection to enhance his meal. I went to open the sliding door and it wouldn’t budge. I tried again, nothing. I turned to Billy and asked him to try it, nothing.
It was locked.
How could it be locked. The only way to lock the sliding door was from the inside. Our cat was the only one inside the house and she may be smart but not that smart. After a lot of ‘how could this happening’ kind of mumblings between us Billy tried to force the sliding door open with a BBQ tool. That opened it a smidge, and I mean a smidge, but we soon realized we could break it if we kept trying.
That mission was aborted.
So here we are on the balcony of the house with the only door to get inside from the balcony locked, and onions frying on the stove with no one tending them. Not a good thing. The balcony on the house had no way down to the yard. I was about 20 feet off the ground. No ladder.
Our sister lived in the basement suite but her car was not there so yelling for her to help would not work.
We could see our neighbors to the right of us and starting yelling at them for help. That wasn’t doing much good because their doors and windows were closed because it was cold outside. So we started yelling and waving our hands in the air hoping to get their attention. I was getting a bit panicked because I knew the onions would soon run out of butter, fire would be next. The chef was none too thrilled his gourmet dinner could be ruined.
I thought of trying to go over the railing and drop to the ground but after a brief consultation that idea was scrapped.
The yelling and arm waving started up again. this time me leaning or the balcony in hope they might see movement, it worked. We finally caught the eye of one of our neighbors. She came out her door and yelled “what’s wrong”. We quickly explained our situation, to our embarrassment I must say.
Her and her husband grabbed their ladder and headed over to our backyard to rescue us.
Thrilled to see this coming to an end it suddenly dawned on me that the front door was locked. We always keep everything locked. That was the only way to get in when we got down. In the few minutes that it took for our neighbors to come around with the ladder we realized we could get down but not in the house.
We were still in trouble.
Once down on the ground I explained to our neighbors the next problem and Sandy said “well just get a key from your sister”, who did have a spare. I frantically told her that my sister wasn’t home, her car wasn’t there. Sandy said they saw her through the window as she walked past.
Hurray, saved again! I knocked on my sisters door, she opened it, I said “no time to explain I need the key to the front door”.
She grabbed a set of keys saying she wasn’t sure which one was the right one and handed them to me. I started to run to the front of the house hoping that the kitchen wasn’t on fire only to find that my master chef had left his keys in the front door (sigh). In I went and pulled the onions off the stove and into the sink with running water.
No fire – no onions. I don’t even remember if we actually ate that night!
The next night it was business as usual with my hubby at the grill. This time we made sure to keep the sliding door open, just slightly. As the neighbors passed in the back lane, out for their evening stroll, they yelled at us “still not ready to give up the BBQ huh.” Not my man!
There is a long held tradition with men and barbecues, as this story shows.
Note: I stand corrected. A visitor stated I did not know the difference between bbq and grilling. Here is a explanation of the difference:
“When you barbecue you are cooking with a slow circumvented unit of hot air with the lid closed. Grilling is done with the lid up and you’re cooking with direct heat on the bottom, instead of all around the source. “You grill a steak and you barbecue a pork butt.”
