Have you seen the commercial where the guy gets out of the car to talk to his friend and the guy says, something like, ‘dude, what happened to you’. The guy dressed in red pants, and bright shirt with a scarf says, something like, ‘my girlfriend wants me to dress better since I have this new car’.
This is a prefect example of how not to update your guys wardrobe!
Billy and I were talking about this and, as a guy, he has some very good pointers for woman out there.
- Don’t try to update his wardrobe all at once. He will resist. Not only because he won’t be comfortable with a change all at once, but he knows he will also have to face his buddies who are likely to raz him.
- Don’t make him feel as these wardrobe changes are ‘criticism’ or that you don’t like the way he looks now. Either one might hurt his feelings or make him resistant depending on his personality and ego.
- Do try to update his wardrobe a bit at a time.
- Do make it an enjoyable process for him with positive attention about how great his new item of apparel looks on him. Shower him with compliments.
No offense guys, but men are like little boys when it comes to updating their look (just think of little kids fussing when Mom gives them new clothes to try on). When they are comfortable in what they wear why change it. You can give them new pants, belt, shirt, shoes and he might wear them once, just to please you, but then these items are likely to be hidden away never to be seen again.
So let’s make a list of the ‘Do’s’ in a gradual wardrobe update plan. Start small.
– If a belt is not part of his casual wardrobe buy him one. A belt can improve his look, even slightly.
– If he likes to wear a cap, that looks like it was washed 1000 times, buy him a new one. Even a nice denim one will ad some flair
– If his socks are fit for company only when he has shoes on, buy him a designer pair (or two) that aren’t too exotic (that can come later).
– If his tie inventory consists of 5, changing each day but nothing new, buy him a designer tie that fits his personality.
– If his sneakers look like, and smell like, they should be put out of their misery, buy him a nice pair of high top sneakers.
