How Work Turned Into A Life Experience

Many life changes took me from university, to retail, to working in the film industry to working in so many different areas that would take too long to list. Loved them all!

So many life experiences.  A couple I that just remembered tonight that I want to share with you.

I started working as an extra in the film industry (that is someone that usually is in the background, may have a featured spot, but no speaking part).

My first of many extra part was in 21 Jump Street, the original, with Johnny Depp.  

I was lucky enough to be part of many episodes with him.  I have to say that he was a really nice guy, great sense of humor, and always great with everyone he worked with no matter what part you played in the production.

My second, of many extra parts. was in Wise Guy with Ken Wahl.

I was so lucky to be part of so many episodes.  Working with Jonathan Banks, Kevin Spacey, Tim Curry and so many more great actors.

The one the came to mind tonight that was the best of a working life experience was when I played a waitress in a bar scene.  The cast, well WOW, Debbie Harry, Glenn Frey, Mick Fleetwood, and many more. How lucky was I to be a part of this!

This was done in Vancouver, B.C.  It was a winter night and I was late so parked my car in Gastown and ran to get there on time.  The filming took hours.  Loved every minute.  At the end I went to drive home and my car was gone – towed.  I went back to the set and they all chipped in to help pay to get my car out.

But hey, what an experience.  A life experience that I will always remember.

Ticking Down To Gift Giving Season

Who Knew A Purse Was Such A Great Gift For Her

I have never really been that  ‘into’ purses. Well, I admit, I had a different purse for different outfits. I had a black one, blue one, brown one, and a neutral purses that would go with just about everything. But I was never really excited about purses, until now. The other day I was watching a daytime talk show, well not really watching, more catching a glimpse as I was getting dinner ready.  Ok I was watching it 🙂

Anyways…

In this part of the program a contestant from the audience was called up.  She was told she had answer questions in order to win purses.  I think she had the opportunity to win 5, but don’t quote me on that. So the contestant answers some, or all, or the questions and then she gets a purse for each correct one. Well I was amazed at the reaction of what she won.

Sure they were designer bags.  Sure they were worth a lot of money.  But purses?

The winner was jumping up for joy.  Holding the purse like it was a baby,  Putting all the purses over her shoulder have hugging them.  I was amazed. That got me to thinking.  Just because I am not the type of woman who drools at a purse for a gift, how many women do?  So I did a search online and purses are almost as big as shoes when it comes to a present for a woman. The Mystery Of Women’s Love Of Shoes

It’s no mystery to women why they love shoes, however it is a mystery to most men.

She will love a shoe or boot gift
The majority of men have shoes for particular outfits and activities. A pair of dress shoes in black and brown, a pair, or two, of casual shoes, runners, sandals and flip-flops. Of course there is a particular category of men who totally ‘get’ why women love shoes and probably could give a good portion of women a ‘run for their money’ when it comes to a shoe collection.

This article is for the men who are mystified by women’s love of shoes.

First, think about this. You would be hard pressed not to find a man that doesn’t turn his head when a woman walks by in stilettos. Right? Well there is one of the answers. Woman want to feel attractive.

More to the point though is shoes are an accessory item that completes the outfit, their look. Their clothing is not just basic suits, unless for work, as it is with men when it comes to dressing up. Women have lots of different outfits that require a shoe to go with each. Usually they have a selection of shoes that will go with a few outfits, but I’m sure most women would have a pair of shoes per outfit if they could! There is a good hint for shoes as a gift.

Maybe to explain in a different way, if you are a man who loves ties you probably have a huge selection of ties, different widths, different styles, different materials, different colors and patterns, you wouldn’t wear the same tie with every outfit you had – right? Plus you would add the latest styles of ties each season. Well it is comparable with shoes when it comes to women.

Women wear shoes to look good, for sure. When they look good they feel good. They also want to look good for their man. But they also wear shoes to impress other women. Showing off so to speak.

Buying Shoes As A Gift

So you have:

* work shoes (in basic colors – unless she works in retail, a club, or some such place where shoe fashion is a must)
* dress shoes (in an assortment of colors & styles)
* casual shoes (in an assortment of colors & styles)
* boots and booties (leather, suede, different colors & styles plus rain boots)
* spring, summer, fall, winter shoes(in an assortment of colors & styles)
* sandals (different colors and textures)
* runners (walking, running, casual, fashion wedge runners)

I could go on.  No doubt you have noticed the above if you look in their closet.

So you want to buy the woman who has everything a pair of shoes and wondering how to go about that – read on.

First is size. 

If you ware not sure what size shoe she wears then there are a couple of ideas. First, if possible, check out a shoe size from here closet. If that is not an option then as her Mother or a friend.

Women’s shoe sizes are more consistent than men’s so if she wears a size 7 shoe, you can feel safe getting her a size 7 shoe online. Keep in mind that if the high heels she wears are a certain size she probably wears a bit larger size for runners or boots because of socks. So, for example, a size 7 high heel, probably a size 7 1/2 for a runner or a boot to accommodate socks.

Second is style.

Have a look at their current shoe collection.  Do they look basic, a bit trendy, or totally ‘out there’?  Think about how the woman in your life talks about shoes.  Does she get drawn to every shoe store you pass?  Do you hear her say “oh I love these” quite often when you are in the store?  Likely she is into trendy shoes and the latest styles. The other consideration with style is what was in fashion last year may look dated this year. Granted some women do by expensive classic shoes that last season after season, but I think that is the exception.

Color matters.

This can vary but if you have a good feel for her color preferences you should do well with this.  Basically you can’t go wrong with the latest shoe in black (doesn’t have to be solid black), for fall or winter. To gamble on bright red polka dots, or florescent green may not be the best idea unless her clothing is very trendy to outrageous.

Plus you have to look at seasonal changes.  Some shoes that a woman would wear in the winter simply would work for her in the summer.

Keep an eye on what new clothing or outfits she has in mind or purchased.

Is she is a ‘green’

Then you want to make sure the shoe/boot gift you get for her is eco friendly and using sustainable materials.

When shopping online you can easily see what’s new in shoes as most have a ‘what’s new’ page, others show their newest styles right at the beginning. You can also do a ‘search by’ and select new. These shoes are what is up to the minute fashionable.

Shoes are expensive, though you can find cheap ones, but keep in mind you are paying for quality and craftsmanship.  Designer footwear are both of those plus more likely to last more than one season in her favorite shoe section.

An Accessory Gift That Is So Often Neglected

The belt is the most often ignored accessory gift, especially for women.

When men think of buying an accessory gift for the woman who has everything they tend to think earrings, bracelet, maybe even a ring. Scarves have even been updated as a fashion accessory item so they tend to look at those too.

But they don’t often think of buying a belt because they don’t see it as a fashion accessory when in fact it is.

Since my ‘hippy days’, during my career as a fashion retail manager, and right through today, belts have played an important role in my styles, adding versatility and flair to even my most basic outfits.

Today there are so many different styles and shapes of belts. Plain color belts with outstanding buckles or fringe. Colored belts in earth tones or fluorescent waves of color. Yes belts made of leather or suede, but also belts made with recycled materials and even metals. The combinations of belts is endless and more unique ones are hitting the market daily.

A gift of a belt can make any outfit stand out more.

Think of a plain black dress she owns. If you gave her a stunning belt that she can add to that black dress it’s no longer plain – stunning – right! Or an exotic leopard print belt to a pair of black pants – sensational!

The belt has long been overlooked and I am here to remind you gift searchers that you can find a belt that will not only thrill her, make her outfit look incredibly beautiful, but also a gift that she can wear with so many different outfits.

You gals out there that look for the basic black, brown or grey belt for him, because a belt for him has always been a staple, I have good news for you. Belts for him have evolved in so many ways. A belt gift for him no longer has to be a big ‘sigh’ when he opens his gift. There are all sorts of styles and colored belts that you can pick for him that he will love. Fashion Presentation Is Everything

Just think how a burger can look so appealing in a commercial but it’s all lighting and angles, it’s actually not edible.  Looks good, but really isn’t.

Fashion is no different.

I think I was born a fashionesta. The first part of my career was in retail.  I started drawing fashion design ideas when I was a kid. I worked part-time in boutiques when I was in school.  I also  did live and photography modeling.  Once out of school I pursued my passion for fashion from a sales clerk in a trendy retail chain and worked my way up to managing a store major fashion chain for many years.

What can I tell you, I love fashion!

One thing I know is that when it comes to fashion presentation can make or break it. Some sites I see beautiful models that are positioned in such a way that if they wore a potato sack it would sell, until you do a zoom on the fashion piece itself and see that what they are offering doesn’t look as good as you thought it did, in some cases.

Lunchbox letdown.

Other sites have models that look like they are in the army.  No expression, hands at the side, you hardly notice the fashion piece because of the model’s stance. But they do this for the front, sides and back view.  It gives you the full at each angle. The fashion presentation doesn’t look ‘appealing’, but once you do a zoom on the fashion piece itself you will see that what they are offering looks way better than what you thought. The piece is exquisite.

The presentation is not doing it justice!

In my opinion, when it comes to showcasing the wonderful fashion designs out there they need a bit of both. If the full view won’t work with a bit of expression than it is better to just maybe offer a front and back version.

So you those of you who are looking for a fashion gift my suggestion is to not take what you see at face value.  Take a few seconds to zoom in and actually have a look at what you think looks great – you will be amazed at what you see.
